He lives on a former dairy farm near the salt marshes of Massachusetts with his wife and a very fat cat named Zoe. His wife is a dancer and a writer. Zoe meows a lot, and Mark is sure that she has learned at least six or seven human words, and will be writing her first book shortly. He also has two grown children, Jake, a teacher and musician, and Becky, a painter. Like many of his characters, Mark is from New York City and is often amazed by the countryside in which he now lives, where fox, deer, turkey and packs of coyotes roam about. Reportedly, a ghost horse lives in his barn. Mark teaches at Tufts University and the School of The Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), where his courses have included writing, film, Native American literature, and children's literature. One of his favorite courses, taught at the Museum School (Boston), is on writing for children, from picture books to young adult novels. |
